I recently got reacquainted with LinkedIn.com, the online networking service that connects
It works by linking you to your contacts (people you know), then if you want to contact someone that you do not know (for instance to pitch a new business plan), it will get you in touch by following a list of connections. Someone you know will know someone, who will know someone else, and so on until you reach the desired person.
Interesting concept, which I'm using to search out new interesting opportunities.
It seems though that some people are more popular than others. While I only have a measly 40 connections, some people that I am connected to have 200 and even 400 connections. Either they are very popular or they SPAMmed everyone they ever exchanged business cards with.
But what will happen when eventually everyone contacts everyone and connects? How credible are contacts that you do not know, never met, never spoken with, and merely have in your contact list because of 4 degrees of separation?
I do highly recommend it though. high-tech professionals, recruiters, and venture capitalists together. While most of its members are from California, there are people there from all other the world.
